Bill Owens, uncle and musical mentor to Dolly Parton, dies

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — State songwriter Bill Owens, who was a mentor and early songwriting partner to his niece Dolly Parton and helped begin her occupation in region new music, has died. He was 85.

Parton’s publicist verified his death on Wednesday, and Parton wrote a prolonged eulogy for her uncle, stating “I would not be below if he hadn’t been there.”

Owens helped Parton at the age of 10 get her very first radio functionality on the “Cas Walker Farm and Household Hour” radio present in Knoxville, Tennessee. He encouraged her to exercise her guitar and frequently drove her to local reveals wherever she could execute.

“It’s genuinely tricky to say or to know for certain what all you owe someone for your achievements,” Parton wrote of her uncle. “But I can convey to you for guaranteed that I owe Uncle Billy an dreadful ton.”

They wrote tunes alongside one another, including Parton’s extremely very first single “Puppy Appreciate,” which arrived out in 1959 when Parton was just 13. Owens eventually started off having her to Nashville to pitch tracks to document labels and publishing businesses.

Owens and Parton were signed as songwriters by Fred Foster, a legendary country producer, to his publishing firm Blend Songs, and Foster signed Parton as an artist to his Monument Data label in 1965.

Parton and Owens wrote the music “Put It Off Until eventually Tomorrow,” which would come to be a major 10 strike for Monthly bill Phillips. Parton is also singing backup vocals in that recording. Owens wrote tunes recorded by Loretta Lynn, Porter Wagoner, Ricky Skaggs and Kris Kristofferson. He was also a touring musician and backed up Parton in her early decades in Nashville.

Owens also labored at Parton’s Dollywood topic park as a performer and his enthusiasm was restoring the indigenous chestnut tree to the Good Smoky Mountains location. Parton mentioned that he and his wife Sandy planted 70,000 trees on Dollywood residence more than his life span.

“He was humorous, welcoming and generous,” Parton claimed. “He normally experienced a type term for every person and gave superior tips to youthful individuals starting in the business enterprise.”
