Historian pitches cultural arts center for Washington Avenue

Phyllis Bridges a short while ago presented her proposal for a 53,000-sq.-foot facility on Washington Avenue to the Metropolis Council’s Prosperity and Livability Committee.

She stated Yalik’s African American Artwork & Cultural Center would consist of exhibition galleries for art, a theater for performances and a multipurpose space for conferences and other activities.

“I want it to be a movement that delivers people today jointly from all backgrounds to educate them about the African American heritage below in High Stage,” said Bridges. “This will be a vacationer attraction for Significant Point and the catalyst for that revitalization which is essential for that section of city.”

The task would enhance redevelopment plans for Washington Avenue, she said, which was a centre of Black organization and cultural everyday living in the era of segregation.

It would also connect with other sizeable Black historical and cultural sites, she claimed, like the nearby childhood property of jazz legend John Coltrane.
