Statham, 53, now cracks wise and kicks butt among the globe motion elite with his cheeky tough-male persona in franchises these types of as “The Expendables” and “Speedy & the Furious.” But there is certainly no trace of a smile in this most recent Ritchie flick, which sees his gangster H doing the job undercover to avenge his son’s murder.
“It is really quite a little bit of a darkish journey,” Statham says.

Concern: With “Lock, Stock,” “Snatch” and “Revolver,” you ended up Male Ritchie’s mayhem muse, but it really is been 16 years. Why the delay?
Jason Statham: I’m often knocking on Guy’s Ritchie’s doorway. Just one, due to the fact I’m generally with him. We have come to be very shut buddies about the decades, and we share the same interests, including an insatiable hunger for competitors. We generally try to outdo each other. But I don’t know why we have remaining it so very long. I was hoping to perform with him substantially faster. Every thing is all about timing.
Q: I observed your recent large-stakes chess match. How else do you contend?
Statham: We applied to have onset Olympics. How quite a few pull-ups on that piece of scaffolding? How numerous force-ups with an individual on top rated of you? We thrive on competition. It’s that foolish, previous gent-driven ego we’ve honed. We’re fantastic losers and often sore losers. But it can be the fun of the activity.
Q: In which do you feel you would be now if Guy hadn’t solid you as Bacon in “Lock, Stock”?
Statham: That’s a very reflective form of concern that I’ve questioned myself many times. What would I be carrying out if I wasn’t solid? I you should not even know. But I certainly wouldn’t be in the glamorous posture that I am today. It truly is paved the way for two decades of residing a wonderful daily life.
Q: How clueless have been you on day 1 of filming?
Statham: It was a grasp course of baptism by fire. Like, this is the digital camera. The other gracious actors ended up telling me, ‘You see that thing there? That’s a mark. You check out and wander and land on it. Then the digicam will get the focus and everyone’s happy.’ You acquired self-confidence from everybody’s perception in you. Then we did a different movie. After two, I assumed that Guy’s likely to get killed if he keeps employing the very same chap. But right here we are, 20-odd many years later on, performing it all over again.
Q: Even in the ‘Wrath of Man’ trailer, H unflinchingly kills rapper Put up Malone’s gangster. Was that audio criticism?
Statham: Far from it. Submit arrived in with this massive enthusiasm for becoming killed that working day. He’s like, ‘I cannot hold out for you to eliminate me, guy.’ I acquired sucked into that enthusiasm and he did a good position. It can be just a disgrace that it was a sho
rt moment alongside one another. But I was privileged to pull the trigger in our small scene.
Q: Any post-display screen death music collaboration converse involving you two?
Statham: He invited me to arrive make a file. I swiftly relieved him of that bad choice.
Q: You and Person are both of those fathers to young young children. Do you the two use that for psychological knowledge for a father character who has lost his son?
Statham: There’s a reality that comes with getting a father. I tried to imagine the unimaginable, try to come to feel how that may possibly really feel. What type of a downward spiral that celebration would mail any father. With Male, you will not have to say everything. You just think what there is to believe. With the lens, the score and the audio, Guy captures an emotion with pretty minor mentioned.
Q: Are both of you challenging men large father softies?
Statham: You wouldn’t be significantly completely wrong. I am putty in my little child’s hands. I consider to be powerful, to give the suitable classes. As they get older, you come across it is really necessary to be a minimal bit firmer above specified factors. You will not want to spoil them. You are making an attempt to equilibrium all the issues you need to and should not do. It is difficult. That’s the problems in staying a father.
Q: Your motion picture action scowl doesn’t work in disciplining Jack?
Statham: He hasn’t viewed anything that I’ve done in the motion picture game. But he enjoys to participate in about and battle me with those sponge swords. He’s a boy’s boy. We enjoy struggle and mess close to. So he is acquired the action frown heading, not me.
