New exhibit at Kent State museum showcases heritage, artwork of Black hair

KENT, Ohio — A new show opening following month at the Kent State College Museum is a “landmark exploration of Black hair and its essential, advanced location in the background of African American daily life and society,” the college announced Thursday.

It can be termed TEXTURES, and it “synthesizes new research in record, manner, art and visible culture to reassess the “hair story” of folks of African descent,” the university stated.

The exhibit attributes 180 paintings, hair artifacts, pictures, advertisements, journal handles and a lot more. The university stated the exhibit is structured into three various themes. They are “Local community and Memory,” “Hair Politics” and “Black Pleasure.”

Kent Condition professor Tameka Elington explained she has been studying Black hair for practically 20 decades. She’s a previous interim assistant dean of the Kent State’s College of the Arts as nicely as an associate professor in Kent State’s Faculty of Trend.

“I have generally been compelled to comprehend the disdain Black men and women experienced about their hair texture. I preferred to dive deeply into the root of that self-despise and try to present a option or suggests by which Black persons can start to heal,” Ellington claimed.

Joseph Underwood, an assistant professor of art record at Kent State’s College of artwork, identified as the show “bold in its scope.”

“We hope that it serves as a place wherever anybody, from any qualifications, can check with queries, have interaction in a dialogue or just appreciate the remarkable aesthetics of Black hair,” Underwood, reported.

The exhibit opens on Sept. 10 and operates by Aug. 7, 2022.

Tickets are $6 for grownups, $5 for seniors and $4 for children ages 5 to 17 years old. Any one less than 5 is admitted free of charge. Admission is also no cost for people today with a Kent Point out ID. Admission is also cost-free on Sundays for every person.
