Music is one of the well-known forms of art in the world today. It is also one of the oldest forms of art. It has been reported that music existed even in the pre-historic period. Music can truly express feelings which words can’t express. When you listen to music, it is not just your ears which get affected. Good music can affect every part of your body. People have been using music as a part of hypnosis techniques. People even use music during meditation. Music is something which transcends barriers. The barriers include country, religion, caste etc. Each country has its own native style of music which anybody in the world can listen to and enjoy since it requires no language.
Music is usually divided into genres like western classical, rock, jazz, pop, carnatic, hindustani etc. Musicians have been creating fusion pieces which are combinations of different music genres.
Music has given rise to legends such as Mozart and Beethoven who specialized in western classical music. Mozart and Beethoven belonged to the 18th and 19th century respectively. But, people listen to their musical creations even today. This says that such legendary musicians have become immortals through music.
Every country has its own musical legend. America has its own list of legendary musicians such as Jimi Hendrix, Hank Williams, Hans Zimmer and so on. Ennio Morricone is a great film composer from Italy. India is a country which is known for its rich music culture. A.R.Rahman is a film music composer from India who is revered everywhere for his timeless compositions. Rock is a genre of music that has generated millions of followers all over the world. Rock bands like Pink Floyd are known for their exploits in the rock genre. All these musicians have created musical albums that have generated record sales worldwide.
However, there is one issue called piracy that has been plaguing the music industry in the last ten years or so. The reason for piracy in the music industry can be attributed to the huge development and popularity of internet. Even world-class contemporary musicians like A.R.Rahman and Hans Zimmer are finding it difficult to sell their soundtracks due to piracy.
People don’t realize how hard it is on music companies and the individual musicians when they download music illegally from the internet. Some people simply copy the work of other musicians and use it for their own movies or musical albums. It is not only unethical but also illegal.
